Treadmill Friends vs Sofa Friends

Treadmill Friends vs Sofa Friends

1. Treadmill friends - After hanging out with them, you have so much energy you want to run on a treadmill to calm down.

2. Sofa friends - After hanging out with them, you are so drained that you want to lie down on a sofa to recover.

Why? Energy transference.

It's a concept that is difficult to describe in words -- but everyone has felt it.

You feel like you've done a double espresso after speaking to them.

Steve Jobs' energy transference was so strong they called it a "Reality Distortion Field"

Lots of the stories at funerals involve the energy transference that person gave:

• "He made you feel like the only person in the room"

• "She was the first person to believe in me"

I've always struggled to understand: "People don't remember what you say -- they remember how you made them feel"

After hearing the term "energy transference", it now makes sense.

------

Nuance:

1. I don't think there's a mystical woo-woo energy.

It's probably a mix of charisma, tonality, belief, facial expressions, wisdom, and worldview that blend together.

Our subconscious brain understands it.

2. I also don't think you can teach energy transference.

However, if you hang around treadmill friends -- it becomes mimetic. The same is true for sofa friends.

3. Be careful about doing late-night dinners with treadmill friends. You can struggle to sleep afterward.
